Interesting....

I find it interesting that McCain's VP pick is from Wasilla, Alaska. As many of you know, Leila lives in Alaska. She doesn't live in Wasilla right now, but she did live there for a year. I'll have to ask Leila what she thinks.

Though it is progressive that McCain chose this VP candidate, I think that choosing a woman is just a ploy to grab up the female voters. That and he probably wants to sink a ton of oil wells into Alaska. I think that it could bite him in the ass though. All those redneck male voters out there are probably more scared of a woman in the White House than they are of a black man. It should be an interesting election though. I hope that whomever gets in office actually does something to help out the struggling middle class. AKA me.

    This from Leila:

Palin might be popular in most parts of Alaska, but here in Ketchikan and throughout Southeast Alaska (the rainy, island-riddled part of the state also called the Inside Passage), she doesn't have very many fans. It irks residents here that she brags about vetoing Ketchikan's bridge, which would have connected the island on which our city is built with the island on which our very busy airport is located. She also claims she told the U.S. Congress that Alaskans didn't want their money, and if Alaska wants a bridge, we'll build it ourselves. She fails to note that she didn't then send the bridge money back to Congress, but instead redirected those funds to other Alaska state road projects that didn't benefit Ketchikan or Southeast.

She also vetoed many Legislature-approved projects (roads and infrasctructure) for Southeast Alaska in the most recent state budget, but retained most of the projects for her hometown of Wasilla. She refuses to live in our state capital, Juneau, which is where the governor's mansion is located, and instead opened an office in Anchorage, to which she commutes an hour (one way) each day from her home in Wasilla at taxpayers' expense.Juneau, by the way, is in Southeast Alaska.

I've heard from several staunch Christian conservatives in Ketchikan that they were wavering about McCain anyway, and now that Palin is on the ticket they'll either vote for Obama or not vote at all.

Palin has, pun intended, burned her bridges in this Alaska city.
